Abstract: The western pine shoot borer, Eucosma sonomana Kearfott, is a pest of ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws., and can infest other pines in the western USA, by mining the pith of terminal shoots. This feeding causes an average 25% growth. Western pine-shoot borer: a threat to intensive management of ponderosa pine in the Rocky Mountain area and southwest.

The objective of this project is to minimize the influence, to the extent possible, of the western pine shoot borer in these plantations so the trees' actual Western pine-shoot borer book capabilities can be assessed.

This was an operational suppression program aimed at reducing impacts. Thus, no attempt was made to select plantations with similar infestation levels. No other pest produces the shortened, compacted appearance of affected terminals, without killing, as does the western pine shoot borer.

Lateral shoots also may be killed by Diplodia, comandra, or other canker diseases. Look for evidence of shoot borer mining in the pith.
